Charles Henry Butler Jr., the son of Charles and Grace Butler, was born on October 17, 1920 , in Albany, New York. In 1930, he was living with his family in Schenectady. Charles graduated from Mont Pleasant High School and worked at General Electric before joining the military.

In October 1942, Charles enlisted in the United States Navy Reserve. He received his training in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and Pensacola, Florida. He held the rank of Ensign and was also a photo reconnaissance pilot. On February 17, 1945, Charles' plane went missing while engaging in the first fighter plane strike on Tokyo. He is remembered at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Hawaii.
