Clayton Erwin Van Veghten, the son of Erwin and Flavia (Engle) Van Veghten, was born on June 25, 1919, in Schenectady, New York. He attended Nott Terrace High School and graduated in 1937. Before enlisting, he worked for General Electric.
On April 9, 1941, Clayton enlisted in the United States Army. He held the rank of Technical Sergeant and served with Company K, 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division. On September 22, 1944, while participating in the Battle of Metz, Clayton was killed while serving under General Patton. He is buried in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Guilderland, New York.
