Courtland John Thomas, the son of Charles and Lottie Thomas, was born on September 11, 1893, in Lake Luzerne, New York. By 1910, he was residing in Schenectady with his family. Courtland worked as a teacher and was a member of the Albany Street Methodist Church's Kappa Sigma Pi Fraternity, Chapter 258.
On April 4, 1918, Courtland enlisted in the United States Army. He served as a Private in Company D of the 303rd Ammunition Train. On May 7, 1918, at Fort Dix, New York, Courtland died of appendicitis. He is buried in Parkview Cemetery, Schenectady, New York.
