World War II (1939-1945)

Courtland Phillip Saaf was born in Schenectady, New York, on July 4, 1923. He grew up in the city of Schenectady and graduated from Nott Terrace High School in 1941.

Courtland enlisted in the United States Navy. On November 13, 1942, he was on board the USS Juneau when it was sunk during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal. As a result of the sinking, 687 men lost their lives, including the five Sullivan brothers. He is remembered at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial in the Philippines.
