Daniel Thurston Sack, the son of Daniel and Ada Sack, was born on February 16, 1899, in New York State. By 1905, he was residing in Schenectady with his family. Before joining the service, Daniel had graduated from Schenectady High School and worked as a milk dealer for S.A. Young.
In 1917, Daniel enlisted in the United States National Guard. He received his training in Whallenburg, New York. Daniel was a Private in Company F of the 2nd Infantry Division. Daniel was on duty near Port Henry, New York on April 5, 1917, guarding the Delaware and Hudson railroad's property. He was standing with his back to the train tracks, his collar up around his ears due to the chilly weather, when a passing train caught his rifle and dragged him onto the rails. Daniel died just minutes after arriving at Plattsburgh Hospital. He had been a soldier for ten days. Daniel is buried at the Greenbush Cemetery, Rensselaer County, New York.
