World War II (1939-1945)

Douglas Philip Smith was born in Schenectady, New York, on February 16, 1917. After 1920, he lived with his family in Colonie, New York. Sometime between 1930 and 1940, he returned to Schenectady County, where he graduated from Scotia-Glenville High School. Before entering the military, he worked for General Electric.

In February 1944, Douglas enlisted in the United States Army. He completed his basic training at Camp Croft in South Carolina. He was a private serving with the 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. On August 30, 1944, Douglas was killed in battle in France. He is buried at the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial in France.
