Edward Charles Gelsleichter, the son of William and Kathryn (McDermott) Gelsleichter, was born on April 20, 1921, in Schenectady, New York. He earned his diploma from Nott Terrace High School. Edward attended Ohio State University prior to enlisting in the military. 

In November 1942, Edward enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps. He held the rank of First Lieutenant and served with 431st Bomber Squadron, 11th Bomber Group, Heavy. On July 28, 1944, during his 28th mission, Edward, a bombardier aboard the B-24 Liberator "Sleepy Time Gal," went missing. At the time of his last assignment, he was stationed in the Marshall Islands. He is remembered at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, Philippines.
