Edward Paul McCarthy, the son of William and Margaret (McGann) McCarthy, was born on November 20, 1924, in Schenectady, New York. He graduated from Nott Terrace High School, where he participated actively in cross country and track.

On December 12, 1942, Edward enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He trained at Parris Island, South Carolina, before being shipped overseas in October 1943. Paul held the rank of Private First Class and served with Company G, 22nd Marines. Edward died on the first day of the Battle of Guam, July 21, 1944. He is buried in the Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna, New York.
