World War II (1939-1945)

Edward William Vadney was born in Schenectady, New York, on August 20, 1906. He grew up in the city of Schenectady and attended local schools. Before enlisting in the military, he worked for General Electric.

On November 5, 1942, Edward enlisted in the United States Army. He completed his basic training at Camp Atterbury in Indiana. He was a private serving with the 31st Signal Construction Battalion. Edward was on board the HMT Rohna on November 27, 1943, when a German Luftwaffe Heinkel 177 attacked it. The Rohna was hit by a glide bomb and sank. On that day 1,138 men lost their lives. He is remembered at the North Africa American Cemetery and Memorial in Tunisia, Africa.
