Ernest Edwin Stafford, the son of Paris and Fannie Stafford, was born on September 14, 1892, in Willsboro, Essex County, New York. He registered for the World War I draft while living in Schenectady. Ernest worked at the Maqua Company before joining the military.

Ernest enlisted in the United States Army on May 10, 1918, and was shipped overseas on the Mauretania on July 30, 1918. He was a Private in Company C of the 108th Machine Gun Battalion. Ernest died on September 9, 1918, as a result of wounds acquired in France. He is buried in the Lakeview Cemetery, Willsboro, New York.
