Evans Veeder Crawford, the son of Henry and Edith Crawford, was born on May 14, 1922, in Glenville, New York. By 1930, he had relocated to the city of Schenectady. He graduated from Nott Terrace High School and was a member of the National Honor Society as well as the basketball team. Evans also belonged to Boy Scout Troop 1.

Evans enlisted in the United States Army in 1940 and received his basic training at Fort Totten in Queens, New York. He then went on to attend officer candidate school at Camp Davis, North Carolina, and was commissioned in 1942. He held the rank of First Lieutenant. Evans landed in Africa in 1943 and participated in the African Campaign. During the campaign he became ill and was sent back to the states. Evans died on August 5, 1944, in Denver, Colorado; his mother had been with him since May. He is buried in the Fairmount Cemetery, Denver, Colorado.
