World War II (1939-1945)

Gano Haines Jewell was born in Middlefield, New York, on September 21, 1923. In 1930, he moved to the city of Schenectady with his family. Following his 1942 Nott Terrace High School graduation, he attended Union College until June 1943.

In June 1943, Gano enlisted in the United States Army. He completed his basic training at Camp Grant in Illinois. At O'Reilly General Hospital in Springfield, Missouri, he received his certification from the Technician and Advanced Technician programs. He was a private first class and advanced medical technician serving with Company I, 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division. He was sent overseas in May 1944, and while working as a field medic in France on August 4, 1944, Gano was killed. He is buried in the Westville Cemetery in Otsego County, New York.
