Gilbert Doolittle, the son of Charles and Helen (Wolle) Doolittle, was born on October 18, 1884, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. By 1910, he and his wife were residing in Schenectady. Gilbert was a civil engineer with a degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He worked for a construction company.

On May 8, 1917, Gilbert enlisted in the United States Army. He held the rank of Captain and was part of Company B, 303rd Engineers, 78th Infantry Division. On September 25, 1918, Gilbert was killed while serving in France. He is buried in St. Mihiel American Cemetery and Memorial, France.
