Harlem Nears Jr. was born on August 23, 1930, in Schenectady, New York. He attended McKinley School and Vocational High School.

Harlem held the rank of Private First Class in the United States Army and served with the 6th Armored Cavalry, 7th Serving Europe. Harlem was part of the Army of occupation in Germany during the Korean war when he received serious injuries at his duty station. He was discharged and sent back to the States. Harlem died from his injuries at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Albany, New York, on February 7, 1952. He is buried in Vale Cemetery, Schenectady, New York.
