Harry James Shiely, the son of Mary Shiely, was born on February 14, 1893, in Ireland. By 1915, he had relocated to Schenectady.

On June 23, 1916, Harry enlisted in the United States Army. He held the rank of Private and served with Company F, 105th Infantry Regiment, 27th Infantry Division. On May 17, 1918, Harry departed for foreign duty aboard the USS President Grant. On September 27, 1918, during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, he was killed in combat. He is buried in St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Schenectady, New York.
