Harwood Hobbs Thompson, the son of Samuel and Emily (Hobbs) Thompson, was born on November 14, 1928, in Vermont. Along with his parents, he relocated to Schenectady. He was a Nott Terrace High School graduate, but he also briefly attended Mont Pleasant High School. Before entering the military, Harwood was a student at Oswego State Teachers College.

Harwood was sent to Korea on December 1, 1950. He held the rank of Corporal and served with Company G, 2nd Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division of the United States Army. During a battle near Chipyong-ni, South Korea, Harwood was listed as missing on February 15, 1951. Later it was realized he had been taken as a prisoner of war. He was killed as a POW on May 19, 1951, during an air attack. His body was never recovered. Harwood is remembered at the Memory Gardens Cemetery and Memorial Park, Colonie, New York.
