Henry Herbert Leland was born in Schenectady, New York, on July 28, 1891. He grew up in the city of Schenectady, he played the clarinet and saxophone, and belonged to Musicians Local No. 85. Before entering the military, he worked for the Schenectady Illuminating Company.
On June 21, 1916, Henry enlisted in the United States Army. He was the bandmaster for Headquarters Company, 105th Infantry Regiment, 27th Infantry Division. On November 5, 1918, Henry died from influenza in Rouen, France. He is buried in Vale Cemetery in Schenectady, New York.
