Herman Gordon Deicke, the son of Herman and Emma (Lodge) Deicke, was born on June 17, 1894, in Poughkeepsie, New York. By 1900, he was residing in Schenectady with his family. Before joining the military, Herman worked in the shipping department of the General Electric Company. 

On December 5, 1917, Herman enlisted in the United States Army. From December 1917 to April 1918, he was trained at Camp Upton in New York before being transported overseas. Herman held the rank of Private First Class and served with the 305th Infantry Regiment, 77th Infantry Division.  Herman was killed on October 17, 1918, while carrying a wounded soldier from the battlefield during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. He is buried in St. Luke's Cemetery, Dutchess County.
