Howard S. Nichols was born in Elmira, New York, on October 21, 1897. He relocated to Schenectady with his mother and stepfather following his father's death. Before enlisting in the military, he worked for the trolley service.
On April 24, 1914, Howard enlisted in the United States Army. He completed his basic training at Fort Slocum in New York. He served as a private and bugler in Company A of the 3rd Machine Gun Battalion, 1st Infantry Division. On July 18, 1918, near Chateau Thierry, France, Howard died in the line of duty. He is buried in the Cobleskill Rural Cemetery in Schoharie County.
