Ira Gerald Baker was born in Cobleskill, New York, on August 4, 1919. By the 1930's, he was residing in Schenectady. Ira was employed at the Buell and MacDonald Furniture Company after completing vocational high school.

On January 24, 1941, Ira enlisted in the United States Army. He held the rank of Corporal and served with Battery C, 249th Field Artillery Battalion. Ira was killed in action on June 18, 1944, during the Battle of Saipan. He is buried in the World War ll veterans plot at Vale Cemetery, Schenectady, New York.
