Jacob Talmas, the son of Joseph and Eta (Tomasky) Talmas, was born on October 21, 1888, in Kishinev, Russia. On September 13, 1913, he arrived in the United States. Jacob lived in New York City and Schenectady until he joined the military. In Schenectady, he had a brother and a sister-in-law. Jacob was a Schenectady resident when he left for overseas duty.  

On December 6, 1917, Jacob enlisted in the United States Army. On April 7, 1918, he boarded the SS Justicia for overseas duty. He was a Private First Class with Company I of the 307th Infantry Regiment. On September 9, 1918, Jacob was killed in battle in France. He is buried in the Mount Hebron Cemetery, Flushing, Queens County, New York.
