James Edward Hicks was born in Schenectady, New York, on November 5, 1930. He grew up in the city of Schenectady, and in 1949 he graduated from St. Joseph's High School. After graduating from high school, he was a student at the State University Institute of Utica studying retail. Before entering the military, he was working for the Wallace Company on State Street in Schenectady.
On October 9, 1951, James enlisted in the United States Army. He completed his basic training at Fort Breckinridge in Kentucky. He was a private first class serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. On October 14, 1952, James was killed during the Battle of Triangle Hill. He is buried in the Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery in Niskayuna, New York.
