James G. Strugnell was born in Pueblo, Colorado, in 1898. When he enlisted, he was residing in Schenectady.

On March 27, 1917, James enlisted in the United States Army. On May 17, 1918, James was transported overseas aboard the USS President Grant. He was a Private in Company E of the 105th Infantry Regiment, 27th Infantry Division. He was killed in action on October 19, 1918, during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia.
