James W. Allen was born in Schenectady, New York, in February 1897. He grew up in the city of Schenectady, and before entering the military, he worked for General Electric.
On August 24, 1916, James enlisted in the United States Army. He was sent overseas on October 27, 1917, aboard the U.S. Army troopship SS Tunisian. He was a corporal serving with Company C, 69th US Infantry, Rainbow Division. On August 1, 1918, James died from wounds received during the Battle of Chateau-Thierry, France. He is buried in the Fisher Cemetery in Rotterdam, New York.
