John Alexander Friday was born in Schenectady, New York, on February 27, 1920. He grew up in the city of Schenectady and graduated from Nott Terrace High School. Before entering the military, he graduated from the University of Maine.
In 1942, John enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He was a captain serving with the 12th Marines, 3rd Marine Division. On February 23, 1945, John was killed in action on Iwo Jima. He is buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Hawaii.
