John B. Nolan, the son of Thomas and Mary (Buckley) Nolan, was born on November 11, 1904, in Troy, New York. He attended School 5 and Troy High School. After his parents died in 1940, he moved to Schenectady and worked for the Drexel Furniture Company.

On June 10, 1942, John enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps. On July 21, 1943, while stationed at an airbase in Orlando, Florida, John was participating in a blackout exercise and was sitting in a bomber when a MP shot and killed him. The MP was discharged dishonorably and sentenced to ten years of hard labor. He is buried at St. Peter's Cemetery, Troy, New York.
