World War II (1939-1945)

John Francis (Jack) Sanders was born in Colonie, New York, on July 10, 1919. By 1925, he was living in the city of Schenectady. Prior to working for General Electric, he ran the Union Stamp Company after earning his diploma from Mont Pleasant High School in 1938.

In September 1942, John enlisted in the United States Merchant Marine. He was a merchant seaman machinist serving on the American motor tanker Atlantic Sun. John was lost at sea on February 15, 1943, when a German U-boat destroyed the Atlantic Sun. He is remembered at Vale Cemetery in Schenectady, New York.
