John Henry Vanderwerken, the son of Daniel and Winifred (O'Neil) Vanderwerken, was born on February 5, 1916, in Schenectady, New York. He attended public schools in Schenectady. John worked for the Maqua printing company.
John enlisted in the United States Army. He held the rank of Private and served with the 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment. On June 7, 1944, in Normandy, France, John was killed in combat. He is buried in the Normandy American Cemetery, France.
