About

John Howard Moss, the son of Calvin and Charlotte Moss, was born on September 18, 1898, in Amsterdam, New York. He lived in the city of Schenectady until he was 15-years-old, at which point he relocated to the village of Scotia. He worked as a Special Delivery Clerk at the Schenectady Post Office.

On January 14, 1918, John enlisted in the United States Navy. He was assigned to the USS MacDonough and held the rank of Seaman Second Class. On June 18, 1918, John fell into the water as he was scaling the conning tower to reach the forecastle. The crew spent more than six hours looking, but they were unable to find him. This was John's mother's second drowning death of a son. On July 12, 1913, Calvin Moss, John's older brother, perished in the Mohawk River at the age of 17. John is remembered at the Brookwood American Cemetery and Memorial, Surrey, England.
