John J. Matula, the son of Lawrence and Agnes (Komorny) Matula, was born on June 7, 1914, in Schenectady, New York. He went to neighborhood schools and worked for General Electric. John belonged to the first Slovak Catholic Union as well as the Sts. Cyril and Method Church.
In March 1941, John enlisted in the United States Army, and in December 1943, he was transferred to the European Theater. He held the rank of Private First Class and served with the 28th Infantry Division. On July 13, 1944, John was killed in battle in France. He is buried in Sts. Cyril and Method Cemetery, Rotterdam, New York.
