About

John Joseph Gunning, the son of John and Mary (Hughes) Gunning was born on July 4, 1896, in Amesbury Essex County, Massachusetts. It is unknown why John was residing in Schenectady when he enlisted, but he must have been a member of the community because he is commemorated on one of the city's World War I memorials.

On May 5, 1917, John enlisted in the United States Army. On May 17, 1918, he was deployed overseas aboard the USS President Grant. He was a Private in Company F of the 105th Infantry Regiment, 27th Infantry Division. On September 30, 1918, John died of wounds acquired while fighting in France.
