John Joseph Stempkowski, the son of Paul and Stella Stempkowski, was born on May 23, 1916, in Schenectady, New York. He participated in sports and graduated from Mont Pleasant High School.

John fought in World War ll before serving in the Korean War. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, John was a First Lieutenant serving in the European theater.

John re-enlisted in the United States Army on February 8, 1949. He held the rank of Master Sergeant and served with Company K, 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. On September 5, 1950, John died from injuries sustained during the Battle of Pusan Perimeter. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia.
