John Kopczynski Jr., the son of John and Paulina Kopczynski, was born on May 14, 1917, in Schenectady, New York. He attended Tri State College after graduating from Nott Terrace High School in 1936.

In March 1941, John enlisted in the United States Army. He held the rank of First Lieutenant and served with Company C, 179th Infantry Regiment. In September 1943, John left for the war and took part in the beachhead campaigns at Salerno, Casino, and Anzio. On August 19, 1944, John was killed in battle in Southern France. He is buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Schenectady, New York.
