World War II (1939-1945)

John Schuyler Hemstreet was born in Scotia, New York, on April 13, 1920. He grew up in the village of Scotia in Schenectady County and graduated from Scotia-Glenville High School in 1940. Before entering the military, he worked for General Electric.

On December 12, 1941, five days after Pearl Harbor, John enlisted in the United States Army. He was a private serving with the 111th Field Artillery Battalion, 29th Infantry Division. On October 17, 1944, John was killed in battle in Germany. He is buried in the Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial in Margraten, Netherlands.
