John Victor Malik, the son of Joseph and Anna (Spurgas) Malik, was born on June 27, 1917, in Schenectady, New York. In 1936, he received his diploma from Nott Terrace High School and began working for the American Locomotive Company.

In October 1944, John enlisted in the United States Army and attended Fort McClellan, Alabama, for his basic training. He held the rank of Sergeant and was part of the 105th Infantry Regiment, 27th Infantry Division. On June 23, 1944, when the Battle of Saipan was underway, John went missing in action. He is memorialized at the Tablets of the Missing, Honolulu, Hawaii.
