Joseph Arthur Antkowiak, the son of Albert and Victoria (Nowatzyk) Antkowiak, was born on March 8, 1896, in Schenectady, New York. He was employed by an automobile company.

On February 22, 1918, Joseph enlisted in the United States Army. He held the rank of Private and served with Company L, 305th Infantry Regiment, 77th Infantry Division. On October 5, 1918, Joseph was killed in action during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. He is buried in the Meuse Argonne American Cemetery, France.
