Joseph Caiazzo was born in Schenectady, New York, on February 3, 1918. Following his January 1937 graduation from Mont Pleasant High School, he began working for General Electric.

In December 1939, Joseph enlisted in the United States Navy. He held the rank of Machinist Mate First Class and was aboard the USS Hovey. When the USS Hovey was torpedoed on January 7, 1945, Joseph was lost at sea. He is remembered at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, Philippines.
