Joseph Martorelli, the son of Anthony and Bessie Martorelli, was born on May 31, 1923, in Palatine Bridge, New York. By 1930, he was residing in Schenectady with his family. He graduated from Nott Terrace High School and worked for the American Locomotive Company.

Joseph enlisted in the United States Army in November, 1942 and underwent his training at Camp Breckenridge in Kentucky. He held the rank of Private First Class and served with Company I, 168th Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division. On April 24, 1944, Joseph was killed in battle in Italy. He is buried in St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Schenectady, New York.
