Joseph Robert Leonardo, the son of Luigi and Maria (Lacerno) Leonardo, was born on February 25, 1918, in Schenectady, New York. He graduated from Nott Terrace High School and participated in baseball and basketball at the local Y.M.C.A. Joseph attended the New York State Merchant Marine Academy, where he also played baseball and basketball.
Joseph enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps and attended the advanced flying school at Moody Field in Valdosta, Georgia. On June 22, 1943, a primary training plane collided with a twin engine advanced trainer, killing Joseph. Joseph is buried in Sts. Cyril and Method Cemetery, Rotterdam, New York.
