Leo W. Kirk, the son of James and Anna (Daley) Kirk, was born on July 4, 1922, in Middletown, New York. By 1925, he was living in Schenectady. He attended Mont Pleasant High School and was involved in the art club. Before joining the military, Leo worked for General Electric.
On December 15, 1941, Leo enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps. He held the rank of Staff Sergeant and served with the 555th Bomber Squadron, 386th Bomber Group, Medium. On July 18, 1944, in Normandy, France, Leo was killed in combat when his B-29 suffered a direct hit to the right engine, fell out of formation, and crashed. Leo is buried in the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, Normandy, France.
