Marcley James Hilderbrand, the son of James and Elsie (Fisher) Hilderbrand, was born on March 8, 1899, in Schenectady, New York. Before joining the army, he worked as an apprentice at the General Electric Company.
On March 27, 1917, Marcley enlisted in the United States Army. On May 17, 1918, he boarded the President Grant and arrived in Brest, France on May 30, 1918. Marcley worked as a mechanic with the Machine Gun Company of the 105th Infantry Regiment of the 27th Infantry Division. He served at the Dickebusch Sector, Vierstrant Ridge, the Knoll, the Hindenburg Line, the LaSalle River, the Joue de Mer Ridge, and the St. Maurice River. Marcley died of illness on October 22, 1918, during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. He is buried in Vale Cemetery, Schenectady, New York.
