Michael Dignon Laymon, the son of Elizabeth Backer, was born on November 22, 1947, in Schenectady, New York. He graduated from Linton High School in 1965.

In August 1965, Michael enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Before his service in Vietnam began, he completed his basic training at Parris Island, South Carolina, and was sent to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Michael held the rank of Lance Corporal and served with the HMM 262, 1st MAW, Marine Aircraft Group 39, 3rd Marine Amphibious Force. Michael was killed when the helicopter he was riding in, which had been carrying out a medical evacuation operation, crashed into the water east of Quang Tri Province, on August 31, 1967. He is buried at St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Schenectady, New York.

Michael and Clement Lajeunesse were on the same helicopter.
