On October 17, 1889, in Constantinople, Turkey, Mike Kalfayan was born. When he was an adult, he came to Schenectady, where he resided on Jay Street.

On May 29, 1917, Mike enlisted in the United States Army and began his training at Fort Ethan Allen in Vermont. He held the rank of Private and served with Company D, 16th Infantry Regiment. Mike was aboard the SS Carpathia when it was sent overseas on November 22, 1917. The SS Carpathia, a Royal Mail Ship, is best known for saving Titanic passengers in 1912. The SS Carpathia ferried troops and supplies throughout World War l. Mike died on July 24, 1918, during the Battle of Soissons. There is no information on where Mike is buried.
