Peter Urnisz was born in Dauksiai, Lithuania. The Veterans Administration Master Index shows that Peter was born on July 11, 1897, although The Schenectady Gazette says he was 16 when he enlisted in 1917, putting his birth year around 1902. On October 11, 1913, he arrived in America on the Finland; his final destination was Schenectady, where his sister Helena lived. Before joining the service, Peter worked for the American Locomotive Company. 

On February 11, 1917, Peter enlisted in the United States Army. On June 17, 1917, he was one of the first boys to be shipped overseas. He was assigned to Company L, 26th Infantry Division, and held the rank of Private. On July 18, 1918, Peter died as a result of wounds incurred during the Second Battle of the Marne. He is buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Schenectady, New York.
