Robert M. Thompson, the son of Walter and Alice (Bullis) Thompson, was born on August 21, 1918, in Scotia, New York. Prior to enlisting in the military, he worked for General Electric and graduated from Draper High School. 

Robert enlisted in the United States Army on April 6, 1944, and attended Camp Croft in South Carolina for his basic training. He held the rank of Private and served with Troop C, 106th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron. On March 31, 1945, Robert was killed in battle in France. He is buried in the Lorraine American Cemetery and Memorial, France.
