Roland Raymond Phillips was born in Schenectady, New York, on March 17, 1895. On several documents, his name was spelled Roland, Rolland, or Rowland. In 1914, he graduated from Schenectady High School and went on to study radio at the Leland Powers School of Radio in Boston, Massachusetts.

On July 24, 1918, Roland enlisted in the United States Army. He was a Private in Battery D of the 31st Field Artillery Regiment. Roland died of the flu on October 17, 1918, while stationed at Camp Meade, Maryland. He is buried in Vale Cemetery, Schenectady, New York.
