Roswell John Spoor, the son of Roswell and Lillian (Veeder) Spoor, was born on May 12, 1919, in Middleburgh, New York.  He moved around a lot as a kid, but by 1936, he was settled in Schenectady. Before joining the service, he graduated from St. Joseph's Academy and worked for a department store.

Roswell enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps on July 22, 1941. He was assigned to the 571st Bomb Squadron and held the rank of Staff Sergeant. Roswell was a radio operator and gunner aboard the Flying Fortress when it was shot down over Berlin, Germany. On May 8, 1944, the whole crew was lost. Roswell is buried alongside the rest of his crew at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in Missouri.
