Stephen John Henry Reed, the son of David and Caroline (Fabrey) Reed, was born on November 4, 1880, in Schenectady, New York. After completing his studies at Albany Medical College, he worked as a Medical Intern at Ellis Hospital. Stephen started his practice in Fultonville, New York, and served as the coroner up until he enlisted.

On August 25, 1917, Stephen enlisted in the United States Army. He held the rank of Captain and served with the Medical Corps, 130th Infantry Regiment, 33rd Infantry Division. Prior to traveling abroad, Stephen was stationed at Camp Bowie in California. On May 16, 1918, he boarded the USS Agamemnon and sailed for France. On October 3, 1918, during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, Stephen was killed in combat. He is buried in Vale Cemetery, Schenectady, New York.
