World War II (1939-1945)

Virginio Martini was born in Schenectady, New York, on November 16, 1912. He grew up in the city of Schenectady, attended public schools, participated in a basketball league, and, in 1936, graduated from Union College.

On January 9, 1941, Virginio enlisted in the United States Army. He was a first lieutenant serving with the 27th Field Artillery, 1st Armored Division. He reported for duty in March 1944 and traveled straight to Italy, where he took part in the Anzio Campaign. Virginio was wounded during combat and died on May 31, 1944, from his injuries. He is buried in the Sicily Rome American Cemetery and Memorial in Italy.
