Vitold Kowalewski was born in Poland on June 15, 1893. On November 29, 1913, he arrived in the United States aboard the Baltic. He eventually settled in Schenectady, where he married Helen Eberhardt on October 13, 1917. 

Vitold enlisted the United States Army on January 17, 1917. He was trained at Fort Slocum in New York. He was deployed out on the Olympic on June 14, 1918. Vitold served as a cook for Company G of the 30th Infantry Regiment of the 3rd Infantry Division. On July 15, 1918, he was killed in battle in France. Vitold is buried in the Oise-Aisne American Cemetery and Memorial, France.
